... For Rebecca

Symptoms vary widely, depending on the amount of damage and which particular nerves are affected. People with severe cases of multiple sclerosis may lose the ability to walk or speak. Multiple sclerosis can be difficult to diagnose early in the course of the disease, because symptoms often come and go — sometimes disappearing for months.

Rebecca has been in and out of the hospital and on several different medications to try and control the symptoms which are painful and frustrating.

Wishes For Children gave her a purple birthday cake, purple roses, cosmetics and a bamboo pad for her computer for her 16th birthday as well several months of specialized pilates training, to try and keep her mobile for as long as possible.

Rebecca has MS, and she is just 16. Diagnosed at 13, the disease doesn't usually strike until age 20. Her disease has progressed rapidly and she has trouble walking, sometimes talking, and sleeps days and is up nights due to the weather. She needs it cool to feel comfortable, heat exacerbates her situation.

Multiple sclerosis is a potentially debilitating disease in which your body's immune system eats away at the protective sheath that covers your nerves. This interferes with the communication between your brain and the rest of your body. Ultimately, this may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that's not reversible.
